Electrical Wire Abbreviations

There are many different abbreviations use with Electrical Wire so use this guide to help you determine which wire or cable is best suited for your application.
THHN Thermoplastic High Heat resistant Nylon Coating - It's a standard single conductor electrical wire used in houses and building to run power from the electrical box to lights and outlets.
THWN Thermoplastic Heat and Water resistant Nylon Coating - Since the beginning of 2010 THHN and THWN wire has be dual rated for both because THWN became so popular. All of WesBell's THHN is dual rated with THWN on this website.
THW Thermoplastic Heat and Water resistant - This is the same as THWN above without the Nylon coating.
NMB Non Metallic - Romex Wire is sometimes known as NMB or Non Metallic cable which is used indoor electrical wiring only.
MC Metal Clad - MC Cable or Metal Clad cable has an aluminum metal clad jacket good for use indoors without conduit, outdoors and in conduit.
UFB Underground Feeder - UFB Cable or underground feeder cables can be used directly in the earth to run power from your house to your garage or barn. It can also run power from your electrical box to your hot tub so that it's underground and out of site.
SER Service Entrance - Round - Service entrance cable is commonly used to run power from a telephone pole to your electrcial box to supply power for your entire home.
SEU Service Entrance - Flat - Same as SER cable but Flat instead of Round.
USE-2 Underground Service - This is an underground cable in a single conductor rather than a cable. It has a rubber jacket and it's sunlight and ozone resistant.
XHHW X - Cross Linked Polyethelene - HHW - High Heat and Water Resistant - Similar to THHN but Flame Retardant on top of high heat and water resistant.
