Romex® NMB Electrical Cable Color Code

Our sales team gets many phone calls about the different colors of Romex electrical wire. Instead of searching out a particular gauge size of Romex® customers are looking for a certain color because the color designates the AWG they need. Luckily Romex® is made with different colors specific to gauge size because these customers might have been trying to order the wrong type of electrical cable.

Romex® 14 awg is made with a gray outer jacket and it comes in a 2 conductor and 3 conductor cable with an additional ground wire (Romex 14/2 - Romex 14/3). A common question is to ask for this cable in a different color but Southwire doesn't make special Romex® orders unless they are very large (in the $200,000 range).

Romex® 12 awg comes in a yellow jacket which specifies exactly that. Electrical contractors can see a yellow Romex® cable and immediately realize it's a 12 awg wire (Romex 12/2 - Romex 12/3). They can use Romex® if they please or replace the power supply with THHN wire. If using THHN the electrical contractor must run each wire individually as opposed to running one cable.

Romex® 10 awg comes in an orange jacket and it also comes in a 2 or 3 conductor cable (Romex 10/2 - Romex 10/3). All of our Romex® cables come with a ground wire in addition to the 2 or 3 conductors. The ground wire is always bare and it's always solid.

Any other electrical wire in the Romex® family comes in a black outer jacket. This is in reference to any awg sizes from 8 through 2 awg. The THHN wire is stranded in the larger sizes to give it a slight amount of flexibility for use in the field. Usually electrical wire is made as stiff as possible without being a copper rod to push it through conduit without getting bunched up.
